How much water should I drink every day?
To quote the August 2007 Mayo Clinic Woman’s Health Source
"Your daily water needs depend on a number of factors, including your health, how active you are and here live. If you’re a healthy adult, your fluid intake is probably adequate if your urine is colorless or slightly yellow, and you rarely feel thirsty. Data show that women who appear adequately hydrated consume about 2.7 liters (91 fluid ounces) of total water a day. Since food usually accounts for 20 percent of your fluid intake, this means roughly 2.2 liters (74 fluid ounces, or about 9 cups) of beverages a day.
Factors that usually increase your need for fluids include:
- Increased physical activity
- Hot and humid weather conditions that make you perspire
- Dry indoor air and high altitudes, which reduce moisture in the air
- Having an illness, particularly one with fever, vomiting or diarrhea
Drinking pure water is often the best way to replace lost fluids. But you can also get fluid from milk, tea, soup, fruit juice, sports drinks and fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and cucumber. Try to limit caffeine and alcohol, which can increase fluid output. As you get older, you may have less sense of thirst, putting you at a higher risk of dehydration. So don’t wait until you’re thirsty to have a drink. Signs of inadequate fluid intake may include dry mouth, headache, lightheadedness, little or no urination, and constipation."
What are the health benefits of glass water bottles?
Non-toxic
The Glass used to make water bottles adds nothing to the fluids contained. Glass bottles are made from absolutely natural materials. These are silica, lime and calcium. These materials are non-toxic, making glass the safest vessel available to contain food or drinks.
BPA free
Unlike plastic bottles, glass water bottles do not contain Bisphenol-A (BPA). According to research, BPA acts like your body’s own hormones. This mimicry causes endocrine disruption that leads to negative health effects. Unborn babies who were exposed to BPA were reported to have neurological disorders later in their life. Apart from it, BPA is also found to be a factor for obesity. The health effects of BPA were discovered quite recently and there is reason to believe to that other chemical components found in plastic will turn out to be carcinogenic or otherwise bad for your health.
"Cleaner" than plastic
Studies have shown that glass water bottles are much less likely to harbor harmful bacteria than plastic ones. Glass bottles are easy to clean, one important reason that glass is the material of choice for laboratory equipment.
Tasteless
Glass water bottles do not alter the taste of any fluid contained in them. Water tastes like water and not plastic!
Oder-less
Because glass is an inert material it has no smell of its own. You will never see perfume in a plastic bottle because there is no material capable of conserving fragrances other than glass. Even the Egyptians during their time use glass to keep essential oils and precious essences.
What are the practical benefits of using glass water bottles?
- Savings – Its much less expensive to reuse a glass water bottle than repeatedly purchase plastic water bottles.
- Reusable – Glass water bottles can be cleaned and reused over and over again.
- Longevity – Glass lasts forever. Glass bottles are the opposite of disposable.
- Easy to clean – Glass cleans much more easily and thoroughly than plastic.
- Dishwasher Safe – Your bottles won’t be altered by repeated cleaning in a dishwasher.
- Microwave Safe – Most glass bottles will be microwave though this should be confirmed for the particular brand in question.
What are the environmental benefits of using glass water bottles?
100% Recyclable
When broken or disposed of, it will return to the earth without any harm; and when you recycle it, its original qualities do not get diminished. Recycling glass consumes less energy and that means our carbon footprint is reduced too.
Every year, 22 billion plastic water bottles are disposed in landfills in the United States despite our effort to recycle them. This enormous amount of waste will contaminate the earth at a rate faster than we can think about. Aside from it, plastic is made from petroleum which is a non-renewable energy source. In fact, 1.5 million barrels of petroleum are used yearly to make plastic bottles for the United States alone. This amount of oil is enough to keep 100,000 US automobiles running for one year.
Aquifer protection – Prepackaged water has been implicated in draining aquifers where the water is bottled.
Transportation Energy Savings – Think of the waste in transporting every ounce of water you drink compared with refilling a glass water bottle.
